“In recent years, many scholars and pundits have warned of the fragility of democracy and the rising tide of authoritarianism across the globe.  Anne Applebaum, whose writings on Eastern Europe include the books Gulag: A HistoryIron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, andRed Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine, will discuss her most recent book, Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism, in which she examines why many of her own friends in Poland and the United States drifted from free market circles into an embrace of extreme nationalism, conspiracy theories, and authoritarianism.  With a polarized electorate in the post-election United States and protests against a new abortion law roiling Polish cities, Applebaum will discuss our current political circumstances and where we may be going.

“Please announce this in your classes, share with friends and colleagues, and place it on university calendars. "Democracy in Peril?" is co-sponsored by the History Department, the Center for Global Engagement, the Office of the Provost, the College of Arts and Letters, the Lifelong Learning Institute, the James Madison Center for Civic Engagement, and the Office of Faculty Access and Inclusion.”
